Children in confinement. What symptoms can children and adolescents experience in domestic confinement?

We know that not all children and adolescents respond to stress in the same way. Some common changes that parents should be aware of include:

• Excessive crying or irritation in young children

• Regression to behaviors that had already been conquered (for example, urine loss accidents or bladder problems)

• Excessive worry or sadness

• Unhealthy eating

• Uncertain sleep habits

• Irritability and agitated behavior in adolescents

• Poor school performance or school avoidance

• Difficulty with attention and concentration

• Avoid activities enjoyed in the past

• Unexplained headaches or body aches

• Use of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs

Children and adolescents react, in part, to what they see from the adults around them. When parents and caregivers handle COVID-19 calmly and confidently, they too can provide better support for their children. Parents can be more reassuring to others around them, especially children, if they are better prepared and if they also feel relaxed and confident.

Support your child

There are many things you can do to support your child:

• Take time to talk to your child or teenager about COVID-19. Answer questions and share facts about COVID-19 in a way that your child or teenager can understand.

• Make sure your child or teenager is safe. Let them know that it’s okay if they feel upset. Share with them how you can deal with your own stress so that they too can learn to cope.

• Limit your family’s exposure to news about the event, including social media. Children can misinterpret what they hear and may be afraid of something they don’t understand.

• Try to follow the regular routines.

• Create a schedule for learning activities and relaxing or fun activities.

• Be a role model. Take breaks, get plenty of sleep, exercise and eat well. Connect with those you like.

And above all, enjoy time with your children! For many children, this is a unique opportunity to experience their parents in full and the love that can be shared.lidade e o amor que pode ser partilhado.
